~~~Who I am Inside~~~
Robert had a relatively happy and normal childhood growing up in New York City. His parents were busy working all the time, but he never felt neglected, for all of his classmates and peers were in a similar situation, so he just thought it was normal. When he grew up, he was the same way that his parents had once been, a workaholic. When he met his wife, and they started a family together, he thought that everything would change, but what he didn’t know was how much things would change, because a year after their daughter was born, his wife was gone, and he was left to raise his baby girl, Morgan, on his own. It was a struggle getting nannies to take care of her while he worked, because he had to work to support them, and little by little the distance between himself and his daughter grew all while he was trying to take care of her as best as he could.
It wasn’t until some years later when he met Nancy. She was capable, intelligent, and realistic – just the woman for him. She had a romantic streak in her, too, as he had learned that most women do, but she was patient with him and understood that he didn’t want to rush into a relationship, for the sake of his daughter. He never really thought much about whether or not he loved her, and just felt that was the way things were going to be between them: comfortable. He had been planning to propose to her, after dating for a long while, when suddenly another woman walked into his life, and once again everything changed. Giselle was everything he was not: spontaneous, naïve, vulnerable… Or at least he had thought he wasn’t vulnerable. But she taught him things about innocence and love and belief that he had never thought of before, and by the time her “prince” showed up to save her, he found that he didn’t want her to go.
She had taught him things just as he had taught her things, during the time that she had spent with him in New York and away from her home country of…what was it? Andalasia? Anyway. He had been quite sure that she was insane, going on about living in a tree and talking to animals, and wearing that ridiculous dress made out of his curtains. But during those few days he began to wonder if she was the smart one and he was the crazy one, that she was so happy all the time and he felt so miserable. The way she interacted with Morgan, who liked her better than anyone else, even Nancy, was endearing to him, and she had such an innocent zest for life that what at first annoyed him ended up making him fall in love with her. It wasn’t until the kings and queens ball, when he woke her from an enchanted sleep with true love’s kiss and he was kidnapped by a dragon, that he really believed her. After that, she moved in with him, and their new life together began. He never did hear from Nancy, but that is probably for the best, because now the woman he’s planning on proposing to is Giselle.
Robert is, in a lot of ways, the typical New York businessman. He works in a law firm that helps settle the division of assets in a divorce, though he has reconsidered his occupation, since meeting Giselle. Up until that point, he had become something of a cynic, hardening his heart against the ideas of love and imagination after his first wife left him, and trying to ingrain that same realism (futilely) into his daughter, Morgan. He is great at thinking of the logical side of life, and is very reliable and sensible. However, he is not optimistic about most things and has come to expect disappointment. That was, until Giselle came into his life. Since then, he has tried to be better about being more positive and believing in what seems to be unbelievable – after all, who would imagine that a girl from a whole different world would enter his life and make him fall in love with her in the course of a few days, HIM, the reliable and unshakeable Robert Philip the divorce attorney?! He used to love his job, but now, he isn’t sure what he wants to do, and he finds now that the thing that makes him the happiest is being around Giselle and Morgan.
~~~That's How You Know~~~
Robert was hunched over his desk, listening – though not at all wholeheartedly – to a divorcing couple argue. He pretended to be scribbling notes, but was in fact doodling – little flowers, to be precise. A quick glance out the window revealed gloomy skies. He smiled slightly at the weather's aptitude to match his mood. I don't want to be here, he thought, a million times.
He turned back to the couple. He had used to enjoy his work. Ever since his wife had left, there was a feeling of victory that thrilled through him every time he won a case. For a while, it had consoled him – every time he won, it was like winning a battle of some sort between him and his (ex) wife. He told himself that she had just left him (as opposed to divorcing him) because she was too scared to face him in court. But he didn't really believe it. And as for work? His heart just wasn't in it anymore. Ever since meeting Giselle, the idea of helping to split people up seemed wrong.
"Why are you two divorcing, exactly?" he asked, trying not to sound annoyed. His client looked at him mournfully. "She says I don't communicate." Robert's face brightened. "These cases are the easiest to fix—" "Fix? I came here so I could get a divorce," the woman snorted. "We've already tried all the counseling." Robert frowned. "It takes two people to get a divorce." "That's why we're here, Mr. Philip," the other lawyer snapped. "Now can we please get on with the asset division?" "Wait," Robert's client said. His eyes were frantic. "You're right." Robert waved his hand in a go-on gesture. "I don't want to get a divorce." "Sure seems like it to me,” his soon-to-be-ex wife retorted. "You never once told me you loved me." "I never knew what to say," the man said softly. "But I do." "You do?" Her lawyer rolled his eyes. "Saying that isn't going to fix everything—" "I'm sorry, everyone," the woman said. "But I guess we're staying together, after all." "Oh, please. This doesn't just happen…" The couple stood to leave. "Apparently, it does."
"Come back when he overcooks the pasta," the lawyer grumbled. As they left, Robert smiled with satisfaction. When they were out of sight, the other lawyer's professionalism went with them. "You can't do that!" he cried indignantly, rising. "You just ruined my case. If you don't want people to get divorced, get a new job. At least, instead of ruining other people's." He stormed out and Sam appeared in the doorway. "Anything I can do?" "You're the greatest secretary in the world, Sam," Robert sighed, closing his flower-filled notebook. "I know," she teased. "So what do you want?" He feigned innocence. "Just to have a card delivered to Andalasia Fashions a.s.a.p." "Oh, all right," Sam said, relenting. Reaching for a sheet of card stock, he fingered his company's emblem before clicking his pen and jotting down a few words. He folded the paper neatly and stuffed it into an envelope, then handed it to Sam. "You're a saint," he told her. "Uh-huh." Robert hastily pulled on his coat. He had to hurry if he was going to get to Giselle's store at the same time as the note.
~~~You and Me Together We'll Be~~~
I love Enchanted, and I like Robert because he is a realist, and something of a cynic, who has been forced into interaction with a girl from a fantasy world. He was kindhearted enough to help her in the first place, and she changes his whole life, waking up the dreamer in him. I think we all have a child inside us who can be brought out by the right people. I, like Robert, can be something of a cynic, but it is for that very reason that I so adore children’s stories and like getting caught up in my imagination sometimes. I’d like to show both the serious and fun side of Robert.
