~~~Who I am Inside~~~
What is your character's history? Are they a hero, or a villain, a sidekick or guardian? What has happened to them in their lives to make them the way they are today?
You all know the story…so I’m going to give it to you from Rapunzel’s perspective!
“Well, for as long as I can remember, I lived in the tower with Mother Gothel – well, I guess for not quite as long as I can remember, because I did have that image of the mobile above my crib when I was a baby, which is how I realized that I was actually the lost princess of Corona… but oh! I’m getting ahead of myself, silly me! I’ll get to that in a moment. Where was I? Right – I lived in the tower with Mother Gothel. I never went outside for anything, and oftentimes, I was alone with Pascal – I never really learned what Mother… why do I even call her that anymore? Old habits, I suppose – I never learned what she did all day without me, so Pascal and I, we did our own thing. Painting, reading, sewing, baking, daydreaming… anything we really wanted. We had a lot of deep conversations about what we think the floating lights are. (Pascal’s a great listener.)
Anyway, I always knew there had to be more to the world than what was just inside my tower – after all, it isn’t very big! – because I could see it, laying outside of my window, so close that I could almost touch it! I wanted so bad to know what something natural felt like, something other than a wall, a book, a paintbrush… or a hairbrush. Pascal was the only link I had to the outside world, and he was so precious to me, and even him I had to keep hidden. Looking back on it, it was pretty horrible, you’re probably thinking – but really, it wasn’t that bad. I got used to it. Mother – oh, I don’t even know what to call her now – was never mean to me, or anything. Or at least she got me to think that she wasn’t, but in her own way, she was, always throwing little snide comments in here and there when she thought I wouldn’t notice them, or something. But when a girl has nothing to do other than read books all day, she gets smart, or at least smart enough to notice when she’s being insulted. But not smart enough, apparently, to realize that I was the lost princess, for eighteen years of my life.
But you know what? That’s all behind me now, water under the bridge, and honestly, I’d rather look forward to the future than be sad about the past! A lot of things happened, but Eugene already told you them – isn’t he just the best storyteller?! He probably called himself Flynn, but I always call him Eugene, because that’s his name, and I think it’s lovely. (My name is a bit more of a mouthful, so he sometimes just calls me Blondie, even though I’m not blonde anymore.) Umm, anyway! Basically, our story started the day before my eighteenth birthday, when I asked Mother if I could go see the lights. She said no, of course, but then Eugene came along, and promised to take me, after a little bit of convincing, that is! Okay, a lot of convincing, and maybe not the most kind convincing, but it worked, right?
So we were off to see the floating lanterns! I was really excited, and I mean really really REALLY excited, to finally be out in the world! I also felt guilty about leaving home. But it’s okay, because I got to have a lot of new experiences! For example, we met this wonderful horse, Maximus (I call him Max!), and I made a bunch of new friends at the Fluffy Duckling – they are so nice and friendly, even though they look a little intimidating! We got into a bit of a scrape, but I used my hair to fix everything – of course Eugene was very surprised! Mother caught up to me after a while, which I wasn’t expecting either, and was kind of mean to me about the crown thing… oh yeah, I guess I forgot to mention that… I don’t really like to…
So! Eugene told me about himself, in a really cute story, and we had a bonding moment. (I was totally crushing on him!) Finally, we got to the place where the lanterns go into the sky every year, and I had SOOOO much fun! There was food, and dancing, and ohmygosh it was all so exciting! With every passing moment my feelings for Eugene got stronger, and I was getting the feeling that his feelings for me were getting stronger, too. I was falling in love, something that I had only read about. The day was great, but as soon as night fell, it was even better, because Eugene took me out in a boat to see the lanterns from the water, and we both sang about our feelings, and it was so magical… he almost kissed me…
Then some things happened which I don’t like to remember. I didn’t even really know what was going on until he explained everything to me afterwards. I thought he had broken my heart, but I found out later that none of it (well, almost none of it) was his fault. But that was only after a lot of other things happened, after I went back to the tower, and he followed me, and he… he cut my hair… and then he died… because I told Mother Gothel I knew the truth about being the lost princess, from what I had seen in the kingdom, and from what I remembered, and then she got mad, and I told her I’d let her use my hair if she let me use my hair to heal… to heal Eugene… because… she stabbed him… and… andhediedanditwashorriblebutitturnedoutokay. Even after my hair couldn’t heal him, because he cut it off to save me from being used by Mother Gothel (how noble, right?!), my tears did, thankfully! And now he’s all better!!
After that, I finally got to meet my parents – well, I’d met them before, but it was so long ago that I didn’t remember it! We cried, we had a group hug, and Eugene even joined in. It was so perfect, and I’m so happy that everything worked out. Mother Gothel had fallen out of the tower and…well, suffice it to say that we don’t have to worry about her anymore… Now it’s just me, Eugene, my family, my new friends, and… oh yeah, an entire kingdom! Now that I’m a princess, I have a lot more duties than I used to, but it’s all so exciting, I just love it! Pascal has done a great job of adjusting too. So has Eugene. Mama and Daddy (doesn’t that sound so much nicer than Mother?) have been so nice to us, they even pardoned him for what he used to do, and they let him stay in the castle with us – though for some reason Daddy says he has to stay on the opposite end. I am so happy and so in love, the only thing that could possibly make life better was if Eugene proposed, so I’ve dropped a few hints, but you know, nothing too obvious!”
Describe your character's personality. What are their strengths and weaknesses, what are their passions? What qualities do they have that are good or bad?
Rapunzel is enthusiastic about everything in life, and it shows in all that she does. Even though she is not quite as naïve as she used to be, now that she has actually left the tower, and especially now that she has been spending more and more time with Eugene Fitzherbert (who, if anything, is a man of the world, albeit a somewhat-reformed one), she still has a lot to learn about life outside the supposed safe haven created by Mother Gothel. Obviously, the fact that Rapunzel spent eighteen years of her life in a lie has had something of an effect on her, though, fortunately for everyone involved (or perhaps unfortunately, depending on their tolerance for incessant questions), resulted in her being inquisitive rather than resentful, and bubbly rather than bitter.
She is curious about everything, and loves to learn, probably because it was all she really got to do for the past years of her life while there was nothing else to do besides read, paint, sew, bake, etc. That being said, since she has been doing them for so long, she gets easily tired of those domestic duties, and loves doing anything outside. She cannot get enough of being outside. She has an obsession with flowers, in particular, because she never got to see them before, and though she certainly appreciates the gesture of Eugene cutting her hair so that Mother Gothel could no longer take advantage of it, she wishes that it was still long enough to braid and weave flowers into. But everyone reassures her that it will grow back, so she can be patient. (After all, she was patient enough to wait eighteen years to leave her tower.)
The downside to this is that the importance placed on her hair has given her a good deal of vanity. Even though she knows she should resent her hair for being the thing that kept her bound to Mother Gothel all these years, she still misses it, in a strange way (it was, in her defense, a very useful tool, and not just for healing and making people young: she used it to bind people in chairs, for instance, and climb trees once she was freed). In the same way, sometimes she misses her old life, just because it was what was familiar to her, even though she of course realizes that she really shouldn’t miss it. Adjusting to this new life has been difficult for her, but thankfully, everyone is so happy about her return, no one has seemed to form any expectations for her, and she has spent her time doing what she loves: learning about the customs of Corona, and spending time with other people, something that she never got to do before.
Though she loves people, especially children, it will take a while for her to imagine marrying (even though she is deeply, deeply in love with Eugene, though to be fair, he is the first man she ever met and really got to know) and having children. After all, she retains a childlike dependency on authority figures, particularly Eugene and her parents. She spends a lot of time just getting to know her parents, who have been nothing but loving and accepting towards her and she loves them deeply; and she is extremely clingy to Eugene. Surprisingly, instead of not trusting anyone, she is too trusting, something that you would think would have ended after learning that her “mother” was a fraud and a kidnapper, so it is a good thing that her parents are overprotective of her (and with good reason!), as well as Eugene serving as a constant companion to the princess, more so than most people would consider appropriate since she is a princess and he is an ex-thief. (Emphasis on the ex.) But of course, Rapunzel doesn’t care, and the kingdom is so jubilant over her return that they always forgive her social faux paus. Rapunzel, too, is happier than she has ever been in her life – even though it has always been her nature, in good times or bad, to be happy.
~~~That's How You Know~~~
Give us a small sample of how you will play your character. Please don't copy a scene from their movie, and give us at least three paragraphs.
The floating lanterns which she had once thought were stars had piqued her curiosity, but never her fear, and Rapunzel was realizing that she did not like everything about nature. As with most people who did not understand something (aside from the lanterns, obviously), the unknown scared her. She had no idea what caused thunder or lightning, and only knew that there was a lot of loud booming and huge flashes. Mother had never explained it to her or comforted her, and so an irrational fear of thunderstorms worthy of a six-year-old little girl had developed in her and had never been cured. Even if she had not been afraid of storms, she would have been afraid of this one, because it was like nothing that anyone in Corona had ever seen before.
Though it should be logically assumed that the young princess was safe and sound, since she was curled up in a bedroom, the door to which was locked, and which was ensconced in an entire chamber of its own, with dozens of soldiers guarding it (hey, after a girl was kidnapped, parents were allowed to take every preventative measure to ensure that it didn’t happen again), Rapunzel was still terrified. Soldiers had not saved her when she was a baby, and the only person she could trust, having learned that the only person she had trusted as a child was the person who she trusted least of all, was, once more, someone who she probably should not have trusted in the first place, because he was a thief (but at least that was better than her kidnapper). While she burrowed deeper beneath her covers, as if that would help matters, and hugged her knees to her chest, she cried out, uselessly and rather pathetically, “Eugene!”
She had only been here for two days, and even though those two days had been filled with amazing events, and lots of love, she still did not feel at home here. Of course, ironically, she had not known Eugene for much longer than that, and she trusted him immensely, but the thing was, when you couldn’t trust someone who you had known for eighteen years and thought to be your mother, you were apt to go a different route as far as establishing trust went. And as illogical as it was to think that any man, let alone Eugene, would be able to protect her from a storm, that was why it was called an irrational fear: it didn’t make sense. So she continued to whimper pitifully and call out the name of her beloved, even though it was doubtful that he could hear her. At least if he did hear her, he would come, and hold her, and comfort her, and that would be enough.
Again, as she had only been here two days, she did not yet know the castle well enough to go wander about it in search of Eugene herself, and even if the possibility of getting lost in the many confusing corridors of the place was slimmer, she was not brave enough to leave her room anyway, as if being in the hallway might somehow bring her to greater proximity with the storm. (Irrational fear, remember?) She knew she shouldn’t be scared. And she knew that, since she was scared, the best thing to do would be to find someone who could comfort her. So she was going to turn to the creature who she had always turned to: Pascal. Now that he was allowed inside, he had slept the last two nights on her bedside table, but when she looked there, he was not there. Her eyes darted about the room frantically, suddenly wishing that Pascal was not a chameleon, and that he was not, like her, afraid of storms: he changed colors to match his surroundings when he was scared, and that made him rather hard to find.
Suddenly struck by a wave of fear, she wrapped her comforter around her, mustered up her courage, and crawled out of bed, going to the door and locking it, though she couldn’t explain why. Then she jumped back into bed and put her face up against the pillow and screamed. There, that had helped a little, just to let it out. Mother never would have let her scream, but Mother had been gone most of the time, so she was used to being able to sing, scream, whatever, without judgment. Now that she was in a castle, though, and a princess, she had to have better manners, so her screams would have to just be muffled. She got bored and started talking to herself, something that she had done often while she was alone – if she couldn’t have someone with her, she could just pretend! As she still didn’t know many people, she tried to practice Eugene’s voice. It didn’t go very well.
And then someone else was screaming, someone who did not have good manners, and she instantly knew the voice to be Eugene’s. “Eugene!” she said again, her voice changing from happiness to fear when she heard him ram against the door. Oops, he didn’t know she had locked it! She got up to unlock it, but when she opened the door, he was gone. Confused, she got back into bed, again, and she decided to practice talking like Eugene again, using some words that she had heard him say. The men at the Fluffy Duckling had said them too, and they were her friends, so of course they knew what they were talking about! She yelled a couple of those new words a few times, just for fun, into her pillow.
There was another noise, and she jumped, startled, before realizing that something was tapping at her window. It was Eugene! She ran to the window and opened it, surprised, to let him in. “Eugeeeene!” she cried happily, burying her face against his (soaking wet) chest. She had never had any qualms about touching him, because no one had ever given her a reason not to think that it was all right – other than Mother Gothel pointing out that she shouldn’t leave the tower because some men had pointy teeth, but Eugene didn’t. She had checked. Twice. “You’re wet!” she pointed out, in case he hadn’t noticed. “What are you doing? You could have just used the door, silly!” Her mood had improved considerably with his presence, but another clap of thunder made her jump, and with a whimper she nuzzled closer to him – he was her protector.
~~~You and Me Together We'll Be~~~
Why this character? What draws you to them, what makes you want to play them? Do you have anything in common with them?
I’ve always loved Disney, and fairy tales, but Rapunzel gives a bit more punch to the story than do most princesses. I mean, come on, did Snow White and Cinderella tie up intruders into their homes? With their hair? Which, by the way, is magical? …didn’t think so. Haha, yeah, she’s got more guts than some of the heroes of legend, even. But she still maintains an amazing sense of innocence and wonder, and love for other people in spite of what’s happened to her. Being able to see the story of Rapunzel from a child’s, and a more mature, perspective in my own experience makes me eager to show her transition from a child-like state to a more adult one herself. Not to mention I would get to roleplay with Flynn Ryder/Eugene Fitzherbert…and he’s hot. Haha.
What would you like your custom title to be? This can be anything you like in reference to your character and will appear under your name. Now’s when my life begins!
Who else do you play here? no one (yet)
