~~~Who I am Inside~~~
What is your character's history? Are they a hero, or a villain, a sidekick or guardian? What has happened to them in their lives to make them the way they are today?
Roberta was the only child of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Moreland. Her name comes from her grandfather, as both her parents thought she would be a boy. When she was born a girl, her mother quickly smoothed things over by naming her child Roberta, saying that they could still have her named after the good Captain. Captain Moreland was a rather gruff old man who during the first few years of her life, Roberta was very frightened of. When she was ten, both her parents died because of Influenza, leaving Roberta in the care of the Captain.
The Captain was a kind guardian, allowing Roberta free reign so long as she spent time each day improving her mind through reading. This was easy for her, since she was a ravenous reader. When she was about seventeen, she and her grandfather began going out on voyages with the ships that he owned as part of his company, as the Captain couldn't remain in England and properly oversee many of the business transactions that would take place. This was a wonderful opportunity for Roberta. What neither of them planned for was their being captured by pirates.
Not wanting his granddaughter subjected to any sort of indignity or cruel treatment, the Captain sheared off her hair and had her dress like one of his sailors. The pirates never noticed the deception, and soon Roberta found herself being freed by two wild young men who called themselves Fritz and Ernst. She didn't want to leave her grandfather to the pirates' non-existent mercy, but she had no choice. She went with the boys and met their family, eventually revealing the fact that she was a girl to them. Some weeks later her grandfather, who had managed his own escape, returned for her in time to sink the pirate vessel that had originally kidnapped them. With her grandfather and Ernst, she returned to England. Now she is spending her days in schooling, trying to learn more about science and architecture, as her time with the Robinson family made her more desirous to learn about how to create things, such as their magnificent tree house.
Describe your character's personality. What are their strengths and weaknesses, what are their passions? What qualities do they have that are good or bad?
Roberta is rather wild, compared to other "proper" English girls. Since she was raised by an old widower who let her do whatever she liked, within reason, she has little self-control and is a tad spoiled. Her time on the Robinson's island did help to water that down a little, but she still has elements of her childish and spoiled nature about herself. Blessed with a great deal of intelligence, Bertie always devoured whatever books came into her possession, dying to know more about the world around her. Her intelligence does make her a little arrogant and, as some people have called her, "difficult to live with," but she is so assured of herself that she doesn't care.
The only person whose opinion really matters to her is the Captain, her grandfather. His approval is what she craves and works for, and he is often rather slow to give it. This makes her more determined to do good work and increase her intelligence even more to prove that she is the equal of any grandson that he could have had. Of course, this often leads to clashes of temper between the two of them, but Bertie would die before she admits that anything her grandfather says to her wounds her. She is incredibly proud, her pride preventing her from admitting defeat in anything and making her rather insufferable at times.
Her temper is also something to be wary of. Given that her grandfather is a sailor, she has inherited his loud voice and gift for profanity, to say nothing of his violent temper. Both of them are easy to anger but quick to make amends, unless their pride forbids them from doing so. Bertie is rather more explosive in her shows of anger than her grandfather is, but she is also much quicker to apologize to those she has wronged, unless she feels that they are truly the ones at fault. This, combined with her other faults, makes her a bit unapproachable, but when someone earns her trust and approval, they have it for life or until they prove unworthy of it. She is as loyal as they come, and she will die for those she cares for.
~~~That's How You Know~~~
Give us a small sample of how you will play your character. Please don't copy a scene from their movie, and give us at least three paragraphs.
The dreams still came now and then; nightmares of what had happened on the Robinson's island. They weren't very horrible dreams, but they did make her unable to sleep again for the rest of the night. Bertie had been afraid at the time, but now it was well over. She had no idea why she dreamed about the island. Ernst and Fritz had both returned there ages ago, so she had no one to talk to about the time there. Maybe that was why she had these dreams. That didn't make too much sense to Bertie's very logical point of view, but it was the only explanation that she could offer.
Now she had other things to worry about, though. Her grandfather had considered making one of the Robinson boys his heir, but they had both turned it down. The Captain had been shocked by that, to say the least, and that left only Bertie to inherit his shipping company. She knew that the Captain was very traditional when it came to matters of inheritance, so he would have to see some reason for leaving her the company. That was her one priority right now: proving she was worthy of such a responsibility. She was, of course. Bertie hadn't been learning and studying about shipping laws for the last few months for entertainment's sake, after all. No…she was ready for this, but the Captain had to be convinced of that. Not an easy task, to say the least.
Still, she was up to it. Bertie just wanted to be able to not worry about it anymore. Yawning to herself as she settled in bed, she forced herself to think positively. She would be the one her grandfather gave the business to. There was no one else that he could, after all. Pulling her blankets over herself with a slight smile, she closed her eyes and let the pleasant idea of one day following in her grandfather's footsteps lull her to sleep, all thoughts of her dreams about the island forgotten.
~~~You and Me Together We'll Be~~~
Why this character? What draws you to them, what makes you want to play them? Do you have anything in common with them? Roberta Moreland was always my favorite female character in the Disney films from the 60s, because she wasn't an almost unreasonable optimist and not a weak person. I love how she is able to take care of herself, except where boys are concerned, because that reminds me of myself in a way. I'm totally capable when it comes to taking care of myself or a house, but when it comes to romance I'm lost. Roberta is strong and independent and I really admired her from the first time I saw the film.
What would you like your custom title to be? This can be anything you like in reference to your character and will appear
under your name. The Captain's Granddaughter
Who else do you play here? No one yet
Tell us a little bit about yourself. Writer of fanfiction for various fandoms, ridiculously obsessive fangirl (just ask Horvath's writer. She knows all the characters I fangirl over), actress, and singer. I tend to memorize any Disney film that I love and I am more than a little talented at imitating mostly female characters. I am a born and bred Disney fan, having been raised on the Disney princess films along with all the classic Disney films from Uncle Walt's day.
How did you find us? Oh…I don't remember how. I think there was a link on another RP site I was a member of.
What do you think of the site so far? So far I enjoy it.
