I'm too eager to try to get back into the swing of things to wait
Character Image
Both my favorite animated version and the live-action version I favor the most are here. They resemble one another, more or less...
Character Name Doctor Otto Octavius, aka Doctor Octopus
Movie Character Appears In Spiderman 2, as well as various comics throughout the years. This version is primarily based off of Alfred Molina’s portrayal of the character in Spiderman 2, with influence from the comics. Marvel is now owned by Disney.
What is your character's history? Are they a hero, or a villain, a sidekick or guardian? What has happened to them in their lives to make them the way they are today?
Otto’s immense intellectual prowess was obvious at a very early age. He was always the geeky child, snubbed by his more athletic and popular peers, doted on to the point of smothering by his mother, and disgusted by his construction worker father. He quickly gravitated to the sciences, particularly chemistry and physics, later choosing to specialize in atomic research and mechanical engineering.
He hated his father, and was hardly moved to mourn when the man died in an accident at a construction site. At the time, Otto was a freshman in college and had taken up tutoring an older student, one Curt Connors, in mathematics. Otto’s relationship with his mother was less obviously vitriolic, but it was obvious that she dominated and manipulated him, making him feel guilty for taking time off work to pay attention to any female but her. A brief relationship in high school with a girl named Mary Alice was quickly squashed by Otto’s mother. In spite of this, Otto became smitten in his junior year of college with a pretty young English major named Rosie. It was the balancing forces of Rosie’s and Curt’s influences that helped stabilize the brilliant young man. They were, in fact, his lifelines, and it was only Rosie’s love and Curt’s support that let Otto muster the courage to defy his mother. He proposed to Rosie the day he received his PhD, despite his mother‘s denunciations.
Otto’s researches lead him eventually into the study of nuclear fusion, which he saw as an opportunity to revolutionize the way mankind supplies its energy needs. Under the sponsorship of Oscorp Industries, Otto designed and created a specialized reactor designed to contain a fusion reaction- literally a miniature sun that could power countless things. To control the reaction during the stabilization process, Otto also developed a quartet of neural-controlled actuators- artificially intelligent mechanical tentacles linked to and controlled by his brain.
On the day that he was due to demonstrate his wondrous creations to the board and the press, something went catastrophically wrong. A mechanical flaw in the reactor made the experiment go haywire, and the resulting magnetic fields destroyed the laboratory. Due to the timely intervention of Spiderman, there were only two casualties: Otto himself, electrocuted and fused to his mechanical arms, and Rosie, impaled on broken glass when the frame holding the windowpanes was pulled into the reactor. Otto was transported to the hospital to have the tentacles removed, but they, with their newly-developed sentience, objected and slaughtered every living person in the operating room. Otto awoke in a charnel house. The final straw came when, upon fleeing, he arrived at Curt Connor’s own lab. Curt, afraid for his friend, suggested that the police be called. Otto fled once more. Under the influence of grief, a peculiar kind of manic madness, and the actuators, Otto became the criminal mastermind and supervillain called Doctor Octopus. Ock’s reign of terror lasted for several months as he attempted to rebuild his reactor and eliminate a certain pesky arachnid.
In a final showdown with Spiderman, Otto’s own personality came to the fore once more and re-took control of his own mind from the Ock personality and the actuators. As the new, hastily-assembled reactor was less stable than the first, he found it had to be destroyed. His final words were meant to be ‘I will not die a monster’ as he sank the reactor in the river, but by some miracle the actuators refused to allow him to die. They pulled him out of the river that night, and Otto has been in hiding with them ever since.
Currently, Otto walks the line between a hero and a villain. He has moments of both, though woe betide you if you are caught in his path when he is acting as Doctor Octopus. Usually, he tries to keep to the path of good, but it is terribly easy for him to backslide.
Describe your character's personality. What are their strengths and weaknesses, what are their passions? What qualities do they have that are good or bad?
Otto: Brilliant, innovative, but a definite introvert. He doesn’t get close to many, though those few he is close to are assured of his eternal loyalty. If pressed, he will kill for the few who are in his inner circle. A definite workaholic who spends most of his time in his lab or reading. His passion is science and learning- to him, there are few greater crimes than destroying knowledge or refusing to pursue it. He has a definite soft spot for abused children, having been one himself. Socially, he is shy and quiet. He has a tendency for biting sarcasm and really bad jokes, though if he perceives something is his fault, he will worry over it for days at a time. Living as a wanted fugitive has given him a paranoid streak- in his book, there is no such thing as too careful. People who are naturally more outgoing tend to baffle him. He has a tendency to talk aloud to and banter with the actuators, who speak to him in his head. Otto’s major vices are cigar smoking, drinking- he prefers a good Scotch- and an extreme fondness for Oreo cookies.
Physically, Otto suffered some damage from the accident that fused him to his actuators. He has some nerve damage that causes crippling pain in his right leg if he is not careful, and he is extremely photosensitive. He cannot go out without sunglasses or a pair of heavy welding goggles to protect him from the light. Even inside, interior lighting is painful for him, and he normally gets around without turning on the lights, relying instead on the actuators’ cameras to see.
His brain has the odd quirk of being able to plot first thing after rolling out of bed, but he is more or less incapable of any meaningful socialization before coffee.
Flo: Upper Right, originally known as Beta. The most intelligent and personable of the actuators, and a bit of a ‘daddy’s girl’. Tends to act like a sarcastic, dominant female, a bit bossy, but bizarrely has been known to take on the attitudes of a teenage girl, particularly where her ‘brothers’ are concerned. Flo is the only ‘female’ personality among the actuators and her camera is equipped with various filters allowing access to night vision and a number of alternate spectra. She is very protective of Otto and likes watching scientific documentaries. Flo and the other actuators were given their names by Rosie, and chose to adopt them in honor of their ‘mother’.
Mo: Upper Left, originally known as Delta. Flo’s twin and the second-most intelligent of the lot. Enjoys watching fashion shows if he can persuade the others to let him. He teases Otto on a regular basis, and is a bit nosy. He is armed with a smaller, retractable tentacle used for picking up objects, and his camera has telescopic and microscopic filters.
Larry: Lower Right, originally known as Gamma. The most aggressive of the four, Larry is armed with an 18-inch retractable blade. Interestingly, Larry is the most protective of children and enjoys Saturday morning cartoons, particularly Scooby-Doo
Harry: Lower Left, originally known as Epsilon. Very quiet, and is typically the one bracing itself on the floor to support the weight of Otto, the harness, and the other actuators.
As a group, the actuators are immensely fast, capable of striking at over 150 feet per second with jackhammer force and lifting up to three tons. They are independently intelligent, have distinct personalities, and act as devoted companions and assistants to their ‘father’. While they often act a bit like children, they have a bloodthirsty streak, and will ruthlessly destroy anyone who threatens them or Otto. They do not need to sleep when he does, though they often go into a power-conserving mode when he does. They are powered by four small plutonium batteries in the harness, are linked to Otto’s brain by a series of nanowires threaded into his spine and brain stem, and are impervious to heat and magnetism. They are capable of hacking into most computer systems.
Doctor Octopus/Doc Ock: The man Otto becomes when pressed to the breaking point. Emotional stress can trigger Ock as well, particularly if something is threatening someone he cares a great deal about. Ock is merciless, brilliant, and devious. He also is prone to a certain arrogance and villainous tendency to monologue. This is the personality who will try to take over the world. A good blow to the head or the efforts of a loved one can return him to being Otto. When Ock is dominant, the actuators’ motions become sharper and the glow of their heartlights slightly redder. It is rare to see Ock these days, and Otto greatly fears this side of himself.
As a whole, Otto isn’t technically a hero, and he isn’t strictly a villain. He tends a bit more towards the anti-villain side of things.
Give us a small sample of how you will play your character. Please don't copy a scene from their movie, and give us at least three paragraphs.
“What are you doing?” Otto asked tiredly. It was not a person he asked the question of, or even any organic being. The individual he was speaking to was a powerful metal tentacle, who looked back at its host through a camera set in the clawed ‘head’ at its end.
nothing the tentacle- actually a highly sophisticated actuator controlled by a sentient AI- replied. Its voice in Otto’s mind was light, male, and trying to sound innocent.
Otto didn’t believe it for one moment. “Larry…” he said, trying to sound intimidating.
One of the actuator’s ‘siblings’, the one called Flo, arched around to peer at what Larry was up to. Flo chattered, showing Otto a picture of the small, plastic device Larry had been toying with. He recognized the object and sighed.
“Larry, where did you get that Gameboy?”
found it
“You found it.” Otto sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose. “Dare I ask where we were today that you found a Gameboy?”
park found it kid wasn’t using it
It took the scientist a moment to figure out just what Larry meant by that. Then he groaned. “You stole it from a little kid? Larry! You can’t just steal things like that!”
what about you we’ve stolen before gold coins computer equipment
“That was different.”
is it
Otto rubbed at his forehead in exasperation and picked up the little video game.
not like we have a return address don’t know who the kid was Mo commented. can we keep it
Well, Mo was right. They didn’t exactly know who to return it to…
“Oh, fine,” Otto muttered. “Fine. You can keep it.”
Why this character? What draws you to them, what makes you want to play them? Do you have anything in common with them?
We share a truly wicked sense of sarcasm and- I will admit- a certain arrogant streak. And intelligence. I’m also rather shy and introverted.
What would you like your custom title to be? This can be anything you like in reference to your character and will appear under your name. Doctor Octopus
Who else do you play here?
I used to play Captain Amelia, Stitch, and Basil of Baker Street before I left.
Tell us a little bit about yourself.
Artist, author, going on three years as an active RPer this October. Talented at a truly ungodly number of arts and crafts, recent convert to Spiderman comics.
