Character name: Hercules- from Disney's Hercules
Test: Hercules, the briefly immortal babe turned scrawny-yet-surprisingly-strong hormonal teen, bulks up into the dreamy hero audiences are familiar with in Disney’s animated feature, Hercules. Hercules was born to the supreme ruler of the heavens himself, Zeus, and his historically incorrect, docile wife, Hera. The Olympian Gods attended the celebration of the powerful lad’s birth, among them, Hades, Lord of the Dead and Zeus’ brother. Overshadowed by Zeus and not really a crowd pleaser, Hades descended into the underworld where he learned from the Fates that in eighteen years time, the planets will align, allowing Hades to free the trapped Titans and usurp Zeus’ position as top God. But as all good plots must go, there has to be a catch and the God of the Dead discovers that unfortunately Hercules could put a severe kink into his plans if he chooses to fight! With no other options and the opportunity to add another trophy to his collection of souls, Hades appoints henchmen Pain and Panic to turn the son-God mortal and murder him. After a rough kidnapping, Hercules is force fed a potion to mortalize him, but an interruption by the couple Amphitryon and Alcmene prevent him from drinking every last drop. This allows him to keep his super human strength and after the baby defeats Pain and Panic, the couple decides to adopt Hercules as their own.
Hercules grew up, viewed as an abnormal boy with a knack for destruction. He had never understood his strength, and awkwardly attempted to be an active member of his community. Amphitryon and Alcmene finally reveal he was a gift to them from the Gods and determined to find out where he belongs, Hercules’ adventures begin by seeking out the Temple of Zeus. The boy ended up with more than he had hoped for when he learns that Zeus is his father and via the statue in the temple is informed that he can only come home to Olympus if he proves himself to be a true hero. Reunited with the flying horse Pegasus, the two embark on a quest to find the trainer of heroes, a satyr named Philoctetes (Phil).
Phil initially refuses to train Hercules, due to his own insecurities after failing to produce a true hero, though his previous students had been famous throughout Greece. He laughs off Herc’s admission that Zeus is his father, but the God strikes Phil with a lightning bolt and the satyr gives in. A hardcore hero program and some awesome abdominal muscles later, Hercules is ready to put his skills to the test. The setting it troubled Thebes and on the way he encounters the spitfire Megara who is struggling in the grip of Nessus, a seedy centaur. Puffing up his chest and striding forward in his hoplite garb (which reveals a pair of nicely sculpted thighs) he requested that the damsel be released and was abusively denied. It was then that Herc turned on the muscle and freed the maiden by his own means. Completely taken with the courageous and witty beauty, he allowed her to leave with his head in the clouds, before Phil refocused his attention on Thebes.
The down on its luck city only openly mocked the would-be hero, but Hercules finally found his long awaited opportunity when Megara arrives in a franticly claiming that two children were trapped beneath a rock. Unbeknownst to either Hercules or Phil, this is all an elaborate trap set by Hades, with Meg as his unwilling accomplice. The trapped boys are really Pain and Panic in disguise, and after removing a large boulder to save them, Hercules accidentally releases the hydra. The citizens of Thebes watch in horror as the young man faces his first in a string of attacks.
Hercules makes the mistake of slicing off the Hydra’s head, from which more spring up, and not even Phil’s training exercises can help him escape the multiples of snapping serpents. Quick thinking allowed Hercules to send the Hydra a crushing blow as he punched and demolished a cliff, showering the beast in boulders. This success led to many others. Frustrated that his’ monsters could not bring down Zeus’ son, Hades plays his last card: Meg.
Initially, Meg was supposed to simply find out Hercules’ weakness, but discovers that he is more than just a muscle machine. Somewhere beneath that chiselled body is a sweet, sensitive, kind and caring person, who loves people- especially her. Having never had a day off since he began training, Hercules bravely kisses Meg and leaves when Phil catches them. Back at the gym, the Greek champion expresses his excitement by training. When Phil walks in and tries to explain that he’s discovered Meg is a double crosser, Herc lets his emotions get in the way and accidentally injures Phil. Emotionally wounded more than anything, Phil decides to go home, giving Hades the perfect opportunity to interject.
Hades tries to convince Hercules to give up his strength but when he refuses, a bound and gagged Meg appears and out of his love for her, Hercules agrees as long as Hades refuses to let any harm come to her while he does so. Accepting these conditions, Meg is freed but not without her former employer revealing her role in the plot, though by now she feels extreme guilt for participating. With the planets aligned, Hades can now free the Titans and sends all by Cyclops to Mount Olympus. Cyclops is sent to Thebes to kill Hercules. The heartbroken hero has no will to fight and is tossed around like a rag doll by the monster. Unable to watch, Meg finds Phil and convinces him to come back and talk some sense into Hercules. This time, it is Herc’s skill and intelligence alone which saves him. The giant gets tripped up and falls to his death, the crash knocking several columns over. One of them tips towards Hercules, but Meg pushes him out of the way and it lands on her instead. Hades’ deal is broken because of her injury. Regaining his strength, he flies to Mount Olympus on Pegasus and defeats the titans, as well as frees his father. Hades has one trump card left to play, however! Meg is dying, and soon her soul will be his! Hercules can do nothing to save her and incensed, he races to the Underworld to make a deal with Hades. He offers to exchange his soul for Meg’s. Hades agrees on the condition that Herc get his love’s soul out himself, knowing that he should end up dying in the process. No matter how great Hercules’ other deeds may have been, this selfless act is what characterizes Hercules as a true hero and his Godhood is restored. Hercules returns with Meg’s soul leaving Hades flabbergasted and defeated.
After Meg’s soul is restored, she comes back to life and Hercules professes his love for her. The two are whisked away to Mount Olympus on a cloud where Hercules encounters his family in a friendly setting for the first time since he was an infant. The Gods are eager to accept their lost son back into their lives, but Hercules cannot accept. His place is with Meg on earth where he wishes to remain mortal. Zeus and Hera agree and the happy couple are allowed to exist together. A constellation is created in Hercules’ honour, which fulfills Phil’s greatest dream.
I’d love to play Hercules because I find he’s a very real character, despite the fact that he has super human strength. Hercules grew up encountering many challenges that adolescents typically have. He has to deal with bullying, not fitting in, and then to an exaggerated degree, even compensating with popularity. He tries to find his niche in the world and to meet people who will accept him as him, ignoring his celebrity status and brute strength. I can’t exactly compare my life to that of Hercules’, but I believe I can bring the charming awkwardness to this character and display his many other strengths, such as his kindness, his compassion, his intelligence, the soft and shy side he has in his private life. Hercules is a well rounded character and it would be an absolute joy to flesh him out in rp. … And who could turn away a sexy Greek like him?
Roleplay
While Phil hid somewhere on the sidelines anxiously gnawing on a nail and barking out orders at Hercules, the hero himself was being circled the mighty Nemean Lion, who had been terrorizing the people of Argolis. Knees bent, his sword grasped tightly in his hand, Herc followed the lion’s movements, both of them waiting for the right moment to strike. It was only a small movement, but the man had seen the lion’s body tense, it’s back arching slightly, front paws turning inward just a smidgen, and then the beast pounced! Hercules sprinted forward to meet it, and thrust his blade up toward the monster’s throat. The weapon did not pierce and his arm was thrown back! Losing his balance he slipped, falling on to his back and as the lion’s massive body came down to crush him, Herc bent his knees and kicked up, throwing the beast off.
Hercules charged toward the Nemean Lion, who was already getting back on to its feet and head butted it in the side, causing it to stumble. The strongman swung over to the beast’s back, pinning it to the ground. Picking up an olive club, he knocked it unconscious over the head before wrapping his arms around the monster’s neck until there was not a breath left in its body. The terror at Argolis was over.
Another day, another rescue, another job well done; the same old pattern kept repeating itself. Slowly, grateful citizens who had gathered to watch the epic battle out of curiosity and to see the Mighty Hercules in action, peered out from their hiding places and a triumphant cheer rose up. A flashy smile was given to the crowd, who raced forward to touch the victor, Phil and Pegasus walked at his side, loyal friends to the end. So why did he feel so empty? Something was missing in his life, but what on earth was it? Hercules knew enough to know this emptiness had nothing to do with being torn apart from his family on Mount Olympus.
