*Happy squeal* PUPPIES!!!!
I remember this being the film that we always watched in elementary school. Perhaps because it's so gender friendly, and boys wouldn't be ruining the happy ending by screaming “EWWW!” when the main characters kissed at the end.
That fact never bothered me though, because I just adore this film. I thought Pongo playing Matchmaker was great, and his commentary on potential couples was well delivered. I remember always laughing at the scene where Pongo's dragging Roger through the park in his search, and the music that played with it.
Cruella De Vil, Cruella De Vil, if she doesn't scare you, no evil thing will....
Sorry. This is a great villain, who doesn't always get the credit she deserves. I mean sure, she didn't curse a baby to die because she was snubbed an invitation, and she didn't murder a sibling for power. All she wanted was a new fur coat. Made out of the skins of poor innocent puppies! Those were people's pets! How could she?
I remember as a kid, barking and howling Pongo's message, hoping the neighborhood dogs would respond. It never really occurred to me that if any dog were to understand, I'd be telling them that puppies had been stolen, or if they barked back, I'd have no idea what they were saying, but at the time, I didn't care.
I love the barn animals too, the Captain, the Colonel, and my favorite, Sergeant Tibbs. “Yes sir, righto sir, right away sir!” If I used that sentence on my commanding officer, I'd either get in trouble for disrespect, or he'd make me go to the mental ward for a check. Or, he might laugh, because he has an appreciation for Disney classics, but I think I'm better off not taking chances.
On the journey home, our cuddly little heroes are facing perilous weather, but thanks to helpful dogs they meet along the way, they have food and shelter for the night, they roll in soot to disguise themselves as Labradors, they manage to get on a van, until poor Lucky gets buried in the snow, washing his fur clean of the soot.
And here's where Cruella scared me. She just lost her mind, and that thing with her eyes? What was up with that?!? You nightmare inducing phsyco!
But as always in a Disney film, good triumphs over evil, and the puppies and their parents make it home, ending on a happy song.
Also worth mentioning is the cameos from other Disney films. Lady, and a few of the dogs from the pound can be seen in the Twilight Bark scene. I love those random cameos.
