Astrid is the daughter of what used to be two of the best vikings in her village of Berk. She was one of three children–the other two being boys–and the youngest. It seemed like every night she could remember her parents and older brothers were off fighting dragons. Every day after a dragon assault they would be rebuilding their home. That alone made Astrid anti-dragon. This, when added to the deaths of her mother and brothers when she was seven years old didn't add up to a very good impression.

It was when she was roughly twelve years of age that Astrid was assigned to help with dragon disaster immediate relief. Putting out fires, saving infants from direct dragon danger–basically the coolest job a twelve-year-old viking could have. In her position she met Snotlout, Tuffnut, Ruffnut, and Fishlegs; some of the roughest (though in Fishlegs's case nerdiest and dorkiest) preteens on their small little island village.

Her hardened and competitive side began to show in the next four years of her life. Though she was a beauty within her group of friends, she wasn't ever interested in finding "the one". All attention was focused on getting the opportunity to slay dragons and be the best in the village. And of course there was always the weirdo of the generation: Hiccup. To her it was a fitting name. The boy was a total hiccup in the Horrendous Haddock line; what were the Gods thinking? After a brute force like Stoic the Vast a wimp like that? But we're talking about Astrid, not Hiccup. And to Astrid, he wasn't worth paying attention to, he just screwed too much up.

Especially during the fifty-seventh dragon assault of her sixteenth year, when he caused the endangerment of Thor knows how many lives. But what made it worse? Going into dragon training with the loser only a short while later. What was Stoic thinking?! Not that she would usually judge a viking like him on his parenting. After all, dragon slaying was definitely more important than parenting (her parents were hardly ever around and she turned out fine)

At first Astrid showed great potential of being the first in her class to be able to kill a dragon. Why not? Snotlout asked her out and wound up getting burnt; Ruffnut and Tuffnut wouldn't stop fighting like idiotic children; Fishlegs geeked out and got burned; and Hiccup…don't even get Astrid started on what he did wrong. But then…something happened. Hiccup started acting weird, well, weirder. He seemed to have more of a way with the dragons and he seemed much more stressed.

One day she decided to follow Hiccup after dragon training. And lo and behold: Hiccup was keeping a dragon as a pet. Naturally she started to run to the village. What would you do if the chief's SON was harboring your town's mortal enemy?! Her plans, however, were cut short by Hiccup and his Night Fury dragon. What wound up happening was more than Astrid could've dreamed or had nightmares of: she found out dragons actually weren't that bad. That they were actually pretty amazing. Downside to her realization: there was a bigger dragon that all the others had to feed, and if they didn't give enough then they themselves would be eaten. At first Astrid and Hiccup tried not to let anyone know about it, but when Hiccup's final in dragon training went horribly wrong (Toothless came to protect him after Stoic drove the beast Hiccup was supposed to be slaying berserkers and everyone went crazy "Night Fury! Everyone duck!" and all that…yeah, didn't go well) things started to spiral out of control. Stoic lead the viking adults on a do-or-die kill-mission against the dragon's nest and left Astrid, Hiccup, Fishlegs, Ruffnut, Tuffnut, and Snotlout alone with the training dragons.

That's when Hiccup did something that was both crazy and stupid. He matched each of the teens with a dragon of their own to fly to the dragons' nest and stop them before it was too late to stop their parents from starting a disaster. Unfortunately, the older vikings had already awoken the terror within the nest: the grandaddy of all dragondom. Astrid, Hiccup, Fishlegs, Ruffnut, Tuffnut, and Snotlout went into action, using what they'd learned in dragon training to both find out more about the beast as well as destroy it. During the viking-adolescent vs. hell-beast battle Astrid was knocked off her dragon's back and nearly fell to her death had it not been for Toothless (the Night Fury).

Hiccup was the one that brought down the beastie in the end, though it cost him his leg. When he was finally up and around again, Astrid came up to him and slapped him (for scaring her), and then kissed him (for…well…everything else). Since then not much has changed for her in Berk, except her awesome new pet dragon.

Astrid would be a heroine or sidekick.

Astrid "embodies the viking way" according to the movie's official website. She's tough, she would kill a dragon without a second thought before she got involved with Hiccup and Toothless, and she doesn't mind getting rough.
