~~~Who I am Inside~~~
What is your character's history? Are they a hero, or a villain, a sidekick or guardian? What has happened to them in their lives to make them the way they are today?
In the tenth century Goliath protected a Scottish clan at Castle Wyvern where they resided along with his clan. Out of all the residents, only the Captain of the Guard showed them any sign of respect. Though the Gargoyles guarded the princess and her people, they were openly mocked and feared. Goliath felt that the best solution for his clan was to coexist with the humans they shared the castle with and to let no war come between them. After one night when the castle was attacked by Vikings, Goliath and clan member Hudson set off to chase away the lurking army, refusing his mate Demona’s protestations to take the others with him. Unbeknownst to Goliath, Demona had agreed to let the Captain of the Guard (who was a traitor to the princess) allow the Viking warriors into the castle and after the people were driven out she would retake the land for the Gargoyles themselves.
By the time Goliath realized he had been led on a wild goose chase, the sun had risen and the gargoyles turned to the stone. The Viking leader not only attacked the castle, but destroyed all the gargoyles that could be found. Five of Goliath’s clan had been hidden in the rookery, and Demona had fled to seek out Goliath so she too was saved. Goliath discovered the massacre when he awoke that night and fled to extract his revenge. It was ultimately denied when the Captain and Viking leader fell to their deaths when he rescued the princess from her own fate (he was still loyal to the humans from the castle). When he returned her, the Magus who had thought the princess had been killed, had cast a spell upon the remaining Gargoyles (excluding Demona who was presumed dead) that would put them to sleep until Castle Wyvern rose above the clouds. There was nothing left for Goliath and he requested he join his clan in this eternal sleep.
One thousand years later, the castle had been transported by the wealthy David Xanatos to his sky high office in New York City. Now above the clouds, the gargoyles could awaken, though they were forced to live alongside Xanatos, for he owned their home- and would try to possess them as well. Goliath was quite wary of their new “friend” but grew close to detective Elisa Maza after saving her from a deadly fall from the battlements following a disturbance on the roof that led her up there in the first place. She introduced the clan to New York City, spending a particular amount of time with Goliath. She was the first human he learned to fully trust, even though Demona (who had survived and developed an even colder attitude towards humans) had advised against it. Elisa had managed to prove that Xanatos was only using Goliath and the others to try and see if they would make good recruits for his own personal army, and then to test out the battle strength of gargoyle machines he had made. Xanatos was defeated and while Goliath was tempted to kill him, he refrained because it would make him just as bad as Demona had become.
Time would lead the Manhattan Clan through a string of adventures during their new life in New York and he would even learn of his biological daughter, Angela, with Demona. Elisa and him formed a bond that took them beyond friendship, but one cruel day would seemingly tear them a part forever. During his daytime slumber, the wicked Lady Tremaine smashed Goliath to pieces to get revenge on Elisa for attempting to arrest her multiple times. Secretly these pieces were gathered by Oberon’s Children of Avalon and Goliath was restored and brought back to life. He faces the challenge of overcoming another heartbreak over the loss of someone he loved and adjusting to the changes life will bring him, though they may not be as extreme that his previous deep sleep brought.
Describe your character's personality. What are their strengths and weaknesses, what are their passions? What qualities do they have that are good or bad?
Goliath is a natural leader. While other gargoyles took offense at the prejudice humans showed them in the tenth century, Goliath did his best to maintain harmony between the two species. Time bred hatred into his mate Demona, but even after a millennium had passed he still found the value of peace and faith in good, despite having someone like Xanatos to contend with. It was the good in people like Elisa that kept these truths alive in him and he attempts to pass them on to the remaining members of his clan.
Trust has always been an issue with Goliath, for while he willingly protected those he protected in days of Castle Wyvern, he was very aware of how humans tended to view them. Before the Captain betrayed them, he was the only person he completely trusted and in the future he had to carefully forge relationships with other humans because he was so leery. Loyalty is one of his strongest characteristics; Goliath is fiercely loyal towards his clan and to those his closest friends and allies and if one befriends him, they are usually guaranteed friends for life. His devotion to his friends also causes him to be very protective of them, especially of his clan since he is their leader. Sometimes he can be overprotective which helped lead to the destruction of the gargoyle clan at Wyvern when he did not allow them to join him out of fear for their safety and the castle’s.
Along with being an excellent leader, he is also an extremely skilled warrior. Out of his clan, Goliath could easily be considered the best fighter, able to handle himself in both, offensive, defensive, and stealth tactics. While he can be very rational, there is no question he is a passionate character whose anger can be easily provoked, which can be both a good and bad thing depending on the circumstances. Certainly if one is an enemy, then it is best to get out of his path and quickly.
~~~That's How You Know~~~
Give us a small sample of how you will play your character. Please don't copy a scene from their movie, and give us at least three paragraphs.
Goliath. The name swirled around in the darkness, hushed whispers rushing in from every corner of the universe. Voice after voice chimed in to the tuneless chant, echoes from the past and the present. They tumbled over one another, merging into the buzz of a thousand whispers before joining in firm unison: Goliath. Awaken.
Bright blue light burst through stone, creating fissures as it spread and the stone which had been painstakingly difficult to repair- for every pebble, every fleck of crushed rock had to be recovered- was cast off by the creature stirring to life. Muscles tensed and flexed, claws opened, massive wings spread. A mighty roar announced to the isle of his return. He was alive. Surrounding the Gargoyle were both strange and familiar faces. His gaze settled upon the ruler of Avalon.
“Your Majesty. Tell me everything.”

Again time had carried on without him. The last memory he had was of Elisa and now even she would remain a shadow of the past. Married is what he had been told. A low and mournful growl had developed in his throat when he reflected on this privately, his heart shattering as easily as he had when his stone form had been destroyed in the daylight two years ago. But he wanted her to be happy and if she was content in her new life than he would be as well. Goliath would not inform her of his return, though he would keep a watchful eye on the streets of New York City, acting as her guardian from afar.
A gust of wind kicked up and the gargoyle folded his wings down delicately, swooping upwards with the current and dipping gracefully back down to catch the next. Below him were a million sparkling lights, all glittering as brightly as the midnight stars. At least time had not altered so considerably as to change the view of the city and a smile of anticipation curled up when he spotted the ancient turrets of Castle Wyvern.
There was not another member of his clan in sight when he landed, but they had been here; he could smell them. What a surprise he would be when they returned before the sun rose and what a joyful reunion would they have the following night. A familiar yelp of excitement interrupted his thoughts and the gargoyle turned, only to stumble backward as he was pounced upon by his faithful pet Bronx.
Goliath stroked his companion’s back, crouching to his level whereupon he received a welcome back kiss. Together they approached the battlements and Goliath wrapped his wings around him like a dark cloak and inhaled a deep breath of air.
“Yes. I’m home!”
~~~You and Me Together We'll Be~~~
Why this character? What draws you to them, what makes you want to play them? Do you have anything in common with them?
I loved Gargoyles as a show when I was a kid and while Demona was my favourite character, Goliath was always cool! This site could use a Goliath due to the expanding number of Gargoyle characters appearing on the site and I would love to give it a go (plus I promised Puck I would)! I am more of a follower than a leader, but it really depends on the circumstances. I can also get fired up easily like our grey blue friend and that ought to be a blast to play out!
What would you like your custom title to be? This can be anything you like in reference to your character and will appear under your name.
Who else do you play here? Hercules, Hook, Captain Amelia, Lumiere, Aphrodite, Santa, Judy
