Audrey walked through the fields of the Hacienda towards the barn, a smile fixed on her face. She couldn't help but be in a good mood. The sun was out on a surprisingly warm day, given the season, and since the shop wasn't busy, her papi gave her the afternoon off. Normally, Audrey would have stayed anyway, just to work on various engines, but today she decided to go to the Hacienda early and spend a few extra hours with Jim.
She was surprised at how much she was enjoying the teenage dragon's company. Despite the fact he couldn't speak, he was fun to be around. His eyes were so expressive, Audrey could tell what emotion it was he felt, whether he was feeling happy, sad, or playful.
She wondered what he looked like when he was human. Various images played around in Audrey's mind, though none of her mental pictures of him seemed right. She had found herself hoping more than once that she'd be able to know for sure one day.
Audrey stepped into the barn, her brown eyes checking around for Jim.
"Hey Jim." She called out, looking up to see if he was in the lofts. "Are you in here?"

Get OFF, you’re hogging the space, and you’re gonna break the stupid loft! The smaller dragon shoved at the thick, glossy black coil of Warren’s body, fluttering his wings as the wooden planks beneath his forelegs creaked.
It can hold me. the snakelike dragon replied indifferently, ignoring Jim.
The loft’s mine! C’mon, I was here first, moron… The green dragon’s rear and hind legs were dangling over the side, Warren’s bulk taking up most of the room. The loft creaked again. Go nuzzle Maci’s pink boobs or something.
Warren turned his head sharply, tossing his mane and hissing. You’re just jealous you don’t even have a girl.
For a split second, Jim contemplated biting the black dragon, but a familiar voice stopped him.
Huh. Looks to me like the girls are practically throwing themselves at me. He gave a reptilian smirk to Warren, who raised one of his bright, orange paws and curled all but one of his toes in. Jim rolled his blue eyes and wriggled off the ledge, landing on the floor with a thud.
Sky-blue orbs rested on the Latina, clad in her usual overalls and cap. Her clothes made him wonder just a little: she didn’t dress quite like a normal girl, even for the somewhat strange styles of clothing on earth. Sometimes, he’d spotted grime and grease on the denim, similar to the state his clothes would be in if he’d spent a few hours on his surfer.
The dragon crouched to Audrey’s eye level, his eyes smiling in a greeting. Hey, you. he thought, bemused. What’s up?

Audrey smiled as Jim shimmied off the loft to land in front of her. His scales glinted, catching the light of the sun as he lowered himself to her eye level.
"Hey there." Audrey said as she reached out to stroke his muzzle in greeting. "Hope you don't mind me being early. The garage wasn't busy today, so Papi said I could leave."
Audrey glanced up to the loft, seeing the now-familiar black scales coiling above.
"Hey, Warren." Audrey greeted casually. She had heard their scuffling and hissing as she walked in, and couldn't resist a little friendly teasing towards the newer of the two dragons. "Wanna stop giving my friend a hard time?" Audrey smirked before returning her attention to Jim.
"So, you doing good today?" Audrey asked, wording her question so Jim could provide a yes or no response.

Huh. Garage. So she did work in machinery and mechanics. Jim raised his brow in mild surprise. It wasn't a woman's job, especially not a teenage girl's. She had pluck to pursue a job dominated by boys: even at the entire Interstellar Academy, there were hardly any female students, and certainly none that could decently fix anything with an engine.
Jim mirrored her smirk, glad that someone could verbally antagonize Warren without getting a scathing comeback. The younger dragon heard the other mutter something about shutting the stupid door to keep the cold out, giving a small chuff out of subdued annoyance. Jim rolled his eyes. Warren could be so sarcastic, though it usually meant he was in a good mood.
The olive-green dragon happily nodded a reply to the Latina, trotting outside into the snow, layers slowly melting under a bright sun. Montressor was such a warm and muggy place of compact stone, snow was something he'd never seen before until recent. The sparkling, white crystal coated the ground like a sheet of diamonds as they glinted in the cheery light. Doubtless the snow wouldn't last for long, the weather quite warm for winter, but it was still lovely out.
Jim took a quick snap at the snow, lapping up a bit of the cold slush with his tongue and swallowing the clean, fresh water as it melted in his firey mouth. His tracks melted in the shape of his paws, his body warm despite the chilly air. Out of the barn, he stretched briefly, velvet-black wings arching towards the sky. Jim wagged his tail a bit, much like a puppy as he sat on his haunches and looked to Audrey, whining a bit out of inquisitiveness as he cocked his head to one side, as if to ask what was on her mind.

"Yes, I can fix things." Audrey teased Jim in response to his surprised look. She wasn't offended by it, it was the same look she got from most guys when she talked about her job.
She followed the olive green dragon outside, taken in once more by how beautiful he was. The snow on the ground made him stand out among the field of white. His blue eyes got that playful look as he chomped at the snow, and his black wings extended out as he stretched, reflecting the sun and-
"What's the matter with me?" Audrey wondered. "I've got a crush on a dragon..."
Audrey mentally went over the time she had spent with Jim over the past few months. It started out as just a job, bringing him food because Elisa was pregnant and in no shape to be carting food back and forth. But from day one, she had stayed with him, even though there was nothing in the job description that said she had to. And today, didn't she deliberately show up early just to see him?
She knew the smart thing to do would be to walk away, but she couldn't. There was something about Jim that wouldn't let her. His soul was still alive in the body of the beast, and it was that that was drawing her close.
"Just get over it, Audrey... This isn't some fairy tale where you kiss him and break the spell. So just grow up."
Audrey was pulled out of her thoughts as Jim suddenly whined at her, his head tilted, as if to ask her what she was thinking. He was way too intuitive for his own good...
Audrey forced a smile as she walked closer to Jim, feeling the warmth of his body radiating off him, making her heart beat faster.
"It's nothing, really." Audrey answered. "Well... not really nothing. I just wanted to see you. I... I like being with you."
"¡Dios mío!" Audrey thought. "Did I really just tell him that?"
<¡Dios mío! = Oh, my God.>
