The HUNCHBACK of NOTRE DAME
~~~Who I am Inside~~~
What is your character's history? Are they a hero, or a villain, a sidekick or guardian? What has happened to them in their lives to make them the way they are today?
“Beata Maria, you know I am a righteous man,
of my virtue I am Justly proud”
of my virtue I am Justly proud”
Riding a dark black steed through the frozen streets, Judge Claude Frollo was a sight to behold as he relentlessly pursued an innocent Gypsy woman, believing her to be a thief, concealing stolen goods beneath a blanket masquerading as a baby. Though he wasn’t to know it himself, this one fateful night would change his life forever.
“Beata Maria, you know I’m so much purer then,
the common, vulgar, weak licentious proud”
the common, vulgar, weak licentious proud”
An incredibly proud and cold man, Claude Frollo was the oldest son of the Duke and Duchess of Normandy. A purist by nature, for years he waged war on the Parisian Gypsies, believing them to be heathens and sorcerers, out to cloud the minds of his people with unholy thoughts and pulling them off the path to righteousness. Seeing them as nothing more then vermin, Frollo ruled over the city with an iron fist, taking care of them on by one.
Determined to rid the city of their vulgarity and debauchery, but having no luck with exterminating them, he became fixated on searching for their safe haven within the walls of the city, believing that if he cut off the head, the remaining body would die along with it. He saw nothing but corruption everywhere so the night he received word that three Gypsies were planning to enter the city via the River Seine, he knew his chance had come.
Heading them off at the docks, he arrested two of their number as the third, a beautiful woman carrying a small bundle of what he believed to be stolen goods, managed to escape him. Determined to hunt her down, he pursued her though the city, finally cutting her off at the foot of the great cathedral Notre Dame and snatching the bundle from her arms with such force that it knocked her off balance, she fell hard onto the stone Cathedral steps and died instantly.
Believing the blankets to be nothing but a bundle of stolen goods until he heard the cry of a baby, the Judge ripped them apart to reveal the face of the ugliest child he’d ever seen. Recoiling from the infant and believing it’s hideous face to be a mark of the devil, Frollo galloped over to a near by well and intended to drop the child into its dark, cold depths when he was stopped by the cry of the Archdeacon who had seen the horrific deed play out in front of him. “This is an unholy demon. I’m sending it back to hell where it belongs” Frollo defended, only to be cut off by the Archdeacon. “See there the innocent blood you have spilt on the steps of Notre Dame” he uttered, to which the judge conceitedly replied, “I am guiltless, she ran I pursued”. Spying the child in his arms the archdeacon continued “Now you will add this child’s blood to your guilt, on the steps of Notre Dame”
“My conscience is clear!” “
“You can lie to yourself and your minions, you can claim that you haven’t a qualm, but you never can run from nor hide what you’ve done form the eyes! The very eyes of Notre Dame”.
Spying the accusing eyes of the saints staring down at him, the judge felt fear for the first time in his life, fear for his immortal soul. He turned to the Archdeacon and enquired about what he should do. Cradling the broken body of the Gypsy Woman in his arms, the archdeacon replied “You must raise the child and treat him as your own”. Angrily the Judge glared at the baby in his hands. How dare he be saddled with such an ugly misshapen monster? Believing it would save him however, the Judge begrudgingly agreed and requested that the child be kept in the Cathedral, away from the eyes of Paris, hiding along with it, any evidence of his own deadly sin. Agreeing to the terms, the Archdeacon requested that Frollo name the child and he chose one so cruel and degrading that all who heard the name would know about the monster who bore it. Quasimodo.
The years passed by and Frollos abhorrence of the deformed child who grew up isolated and alone in the bell tower, escalated. Though he fed, clothed and kept him, Frollo took every chance he got to remind the creature of his monstrousness. Wanting to keep Quasimodo under control, he frightened him with tales of the dark, cruel world and fashioned a lie about his mother abandoning him. No doubt an effort to bury the truth that stained his essence. He warned Quasimodo against the evil Gypsies and their witchcraft and though he grew into a gentle, loving and kind soul, Frollo saw nothing but a devil peering back at him through blue eyes, a reminder of his own sins.
“So tell me Maria, why I see her dancing there,
why he smouldering eyes still scorch my soul…”
why he smouldering eyes still scorch my soul…”
So when he himself became obsessed with a beautiful Gypsy girl named Esmeralda, he saw it as god’s punishment for the life he took all those years ago. Falling deeper and deeper in love with the beautiful heathen, Frollo began to loathe himself, proclaiming she had cast a spell on him, her dark magic interfering with his soul, his heart and his thoughts. Determined to have her for his own Frollo will stop at nothing to get her and if she fails to choose him…she will burn…
Describe your character's personality. What are their strengths and weaknesses, what are their passions? What qualities do they have that are good or bad?
Ruling with an iron fist over Paris, Frollo is as frightening as he is powerful. Seeing himself as devout and righteous, Frollo is blinded by his own obsession to ‘do gods work’ for him and rid the city of heathens, devils and miscreants. He claims he’s protecting the innocent but he is oppressing them. His own people are terrified of him and he knows it, using it to his advantage. If he wants something he’ll get it, no matter what he has to do for it, he’ll murder cold bloodedly if he thinks something is standing in his way and claim it’s a threat to the city, when in actual fact, the only thing threatening the city, is himself. He is as cold as winter ice and as sharp as cruel, jagged sword and to one person in particular, he is a symbol of fear and tyranny.
The Judge claims to love Quasimodo, claims to be his protector and yet treats him as an abomination. Frollo terrifies Quasi to the point, where the thought of disobeying him frightens the poor boy right through to his soul and he doesn’t see Quasimodo as a person, only as a monstrous pet whom he can oppress and command, knowing he will obey without question because of his innocence and naiveté. Frollo uses mind games and cold, heartless words which he disguises as the ‘truth’ to keep Quasimodo and the Gypsies ‘under control’ his menacing presence reducing Quasimodo to a quivering wreck.
Blinded by his own ruthless attempts to stay pure and unsoiled, Frollo has stained himself red with the blood of innocents and his obsession with the gypsy Esmeralda, can bee seen as his own personal punishment from god for falling prey to six of the cardinal sins (Lust, Greed, Acedia, Wrath, Envy and Pride) puts a twisted spin on a character that claims to be holy and yet is shadowed by the devil.
~~~That's How You Know~~~
Give us a small sample of how you will play your character. Please don't copy a scene from their movie, and give us at least three paragraphs.
His breath rising into a mist before him, Claude Frollo glared down at the dimly lit windows of the city below him. A cold winter wind whipped around his tall, thin frame as he stepped forwards, stepping out of the gloom cast by the Palaces shadow as it rose up menacingly behind him.
Placing his long, thin hands down on the frigid stone balcony which ran the length of the Palace’s north face, he shivered slightly as chill drifted up through his fingers, each one of them gripping the stone like a vice as he waited, poised like a predator, staring hungrily at the snaking flow of the River Seine as it twisted its way through the dark, snow whitened city.
In the distance, the Bells of Notre Dame rung a solemn knell out into the winter air marking the hour, and right on time, the tiny silhouette of a small boat made its presence known, bobbing on the filthy, stinking water. They were getting sneakier and sneakier. Those filthy heathens, those parasites which dared to pollute his city. His eyes narrowing and a malicious grin spreading across his face, The Judge turned quickly, his robes billowing out behind him as he tore through the palace, shouting orders to his men as he went. “You there, head them off at the gates. You surround the cathedral and You men, seal off all entrances to the city. I want them alive”.
Almost glowing with a black aura, the Judge stormed out through the Palaces huge front doors and mounted his horse (brought round from the stable by a small weedy boy), flanked by guards clad in armour. Pulling at it’s rains, his steed reared up into the air, braying loudly to the heavens as Frollo smiled with something close to a glee which failed to reach his eyes and set off at a gallop, the horse’s mane whipping out around him as he urged the beast forwards. Speed was key. The deciding factor between success and failure and Frollo wasn’t a man to take failure lightly.
~~~You and Me Together We'll Be~~~
Why this character? What draws you to them, what makes you want to play them? Do you have anything in common with them?
Frollo is one of the greatest Disney villains, he claims to be hley when he is as tainted as a sinner and the way he looks down on people gives him an air of power, he knows he can look down on them and they wont dare to defy him. I’ve always wanted to try my hand at playing him.
What would you like your custom title to be? This can be anything you like in reference to your character and will appear under your name.
