Scott Calvin
The Santa Clause
~~~Who I am Inside~~~
What is your character's history? Are they a hero, or a villain, a sidekick or guardian? What has happened to them in their lives to make them the way they are today?
Scott Calvin is a divorced father who works for a toy company. Scott is an excellent businessman and though the reason for his divorce from ex-wife, Laura is not given, it is implied that he may not have devoted as much time for his family and loses a connection with his son which only continues to deteriorate after the divorce. Laura states early on that Scott is rarely around to see his young son, Charlie and Charlie himself is not pleased with the idea of spending Christmas Eve with his father. Scott does not like Charlie’s new stepfather Neil and is upset when he learns that Neil told him Santa Claus does not exist. In order to try and rekindle Charlie’s belief, Scott tells him that Santa is real; Charlie shows that he does want to believe in Santa by questioning his father during a reading of “The Night before Christmas” and requesting that milk and cookies be left out for him. It is quickly learned that Scott does not truly believe Santa exists and that he just wants to preserve the belief in his own son.
After Charlie wakes up Scott in the middle of the night on Christmas Eve because he heard a noise, Scott goes outside believing there is an intruder on the roof. The intruder turns out to be Santa Claus who falls when Scott surprises him. The night leads to an incredible journey for Scott and Charlie who has unknowingly assumed the role of Santa Claus. He’s very grouchy about the journey, though Charlie loves it and eventually the two of them end up at the North Pole where they meet the Arch Elf, Bernard. Even after their trip, Scott ends up denying the experience and fails at his efforts to convince Charlie he is not Santa Claus. Even though he refuses to acknowledge the truth, he cannot prevent the “Santa” effects from taking over. Scott gains an immense amount of weight, though the doctor determines he’s absolutely healthy, and has adopted a heavy sweet tooth. Psychological affects begin to take over too, for example he enjoys disapproves of the elf design and grows angry over the idea of Santa driving a tank instead of sleigh when the ideas are pitched at a business meeting. He also has the ability to now tell if children are naughty or nice. Unfortunately Charlie’s belief in his father as Santa and Scott’s physical appearance cause Laura and Neil to take away Scott’s visiting rights and only when Scott comes to say goodbye to Charlie and reveals being conflicted about his new identity does he truly accept it after Charlie tosses him the magic snow globe he received at the North Pole.
Scott’s good intentions to take Charlie on another sleigh ride around the world go wrong when Laura and Neil believe he kidnapped the boy. The police manage to arrest Scott and he has to be rescued by the elf swat team, ELF. By now Scott has fully accepted the idea of being Santa and though he answers to Scott, in his mind, his official name is now Santa Claus. When Laura and Neil finally realize that Scott is Santa, Laura throws away the custody papers, allowing Scott access to Charlie whenever he can come around to see him. The Santa experience brought Charlie and Scott closer together and as a result, Scott has become a much better father. The initial trouble in believing in Santa taught everyone to learn that ‘seeing is believing,’ is not true, but that ‘believing is seeing.’
Describe your character's personality. What are their strengths and weaknesses, what are their passions? What qualities do they have that are good or bad?
There was never any doubt that Scott did not care for his son, Charlie, but he does not seem to realize that he is losing him in the beginning of the film as a result of his behaviour. The little gestures like attempting to make a Christmas dinner for the two of them, and reading him a bedtime story show that Scott is willing to try for his child, but he needs to make these gestures more often and be an active participant in Charlie’s life, not only when he has custody. Scott can also be impatient, have trouble remembering people’s names (he couldn’t get Bernard right) though this improves as he becomes Santa, and his sharp wit makes some people think he is insensitive to important issues.
Scott has an excellent sense of humor and is definitely a witty character. He learns to respect Laura and most importantly Neil, and is now a responsible and active father. He is very kind, loving, giving and a great listener, a hard worker and organized (all the qualities one needs to be a good Santa).
Give us a small sample of how you will play your character. Please don't copy a scene from their movie, and give us at least three paragraphs.
December 14- ten days until Christmas and everything was running smoothly. The sounds of elves working hard could be heard all year round, but around Christmas time the work shop was particularly abuzz with activity. Santa Claus walked into the work shop with a jolly grin on his face as he looked around at his hard working team. He looped his fingers through his black leather belt, hiking it up as he called out,
“Great work everybody! Let’s keep it up! Christmas is almost here!”
The statement was met with whooping cheers from the elves that all broke out into rousing song of “Jingle Bells” as Santa headed towards the stables where the reindeer were. Comet pranced up to greet Santa and began to nose around his coat pockets. “Sorry, Comet,” Santa apologized with a chuckle. “No carrots for you today. You don’t want to get fat before Christmas.” The animal snorted and narrowed his eyes as Santa pulled out a cookie and began to nibble on it. “Hey! Don’t give me that look. I’m Santa Claus- I have to keep up appearances.” He placed a hand under his belly and jiggled it. “This doesn’t just happen on its own, you know.”
The sound of an explosion was heard and Santa spun around to look out the door. Smoke was coming from the east side of his workshop and the twinkle dimmed in his bright blue eyes.
“Uh-oh… Bernard’s going to have a heart attack. And at his age, that’s not a good thing.” He glanced over at the reindeer with a knowing look in his eyes, but his brow furrowed when he noticed that Dasher was looking particularly edgy.
“Don’t worry, Dasher. It’ll be all right. Nothing will stop our Christmas deadline.” He hoped. Santa offered the reindeer a hopeful smile and then turned around and headed to the work shop to find out exactly what happened.
~~~You and Me Together We'll Be~~~
Why this character? What draws you to them, what makes you want to play them? Do you have anything in common with them?
I’ll be truthful and say I wanted Santa mainly because Nani has Bernard, but also because he’d be fun to have around in December. Tim Allen is a great actor and did an excellent job in this film, making it a truly enjoyable holiday movie. I’d love the opportunity to try and capture what he brings to his character (one of the finest Santa’s ever)! I definitely have things in common with this character. I believe in Christmas magic, I care a lot about my family and friends, and I am a very kind and caring person in general.
