It was a dark and stormy night in a small town in Texas. Lightning was flashing and rain was pouring down, pitter-pattering against the windows of a two story house. Most of its inhabitants were asleep in their beds at this time, dreaming the night away.
One, however, was still awake. Clad in a white top and black pajama pants with a print of a white kitten in a pink bow, a female figure lay sprawled across the bed, a glowing TV screen on to the figure's front and a shimmering laptop monitor on the side. The movie "Atlantis: The Lost Empire" was playing on the television, while on the laptop was pulled up a Disney fansite where she had a lot of fun.
The girl's name was Caitlyn. She had a pretty sharp and imaginative mind, but at times she could come off as childish. The truth was that she couldn't let go of her childhood, even though the years of her becoming a legal adult were creeping ever so closer. Childhood, while gone from her physically, seemed to never desert the teenager, and she intended on keeping it that way.
Caitlyn reached over to a bowl of popcorn and munched on the snack that she had fixed earlier that evening. Normally, she would have been asleep right now, seeing as it was well past midnight. Alas, due to numerous amounts of Dr. Peppers, candy, and an overactive mind, slumber was the last thing on her mind. Because of this, she had to be extra quiet. The teen didn't want to get in trouble with her parents, who were in the room right under her.
Rubbing something or other out of her eye, the burnette quickly turned her ering eyes from the movie to the comupter screen. The fansite that she was part of was usually deserted by this time of day, although she could still see occasional messages and people who were logged in. Just as swiftly, she checked to see if any of her friends from the website were up at this hour.
A disappointed sigh left her throat when she discovered that nobody was online at all. With a shake of her head, Caitlyn grabbed her Brer Rabbit doll, turned the computer screen away from herself with the motion of a wrist, and went back to watching the film. The volume was turned low so as not to disturb her sleeping family members, but it was audible enough to where she could still make out the dialouge of every character.
The girl propped her head up with her hands and continued to watch the movie. "Come on, Helga," she muttered under her breath, "why did you go with this guy? Look, I know he got you into this whole scheme and I know that you're supposed to be a villain, but he's no good for you."
Right in that point of the film, Rourke had betrayed Helga. "Case and point," Caitlyn commented boredly, petting her dozing cat.
Her gaze wandered to her stuffed Brer Rabbit doll that she had bought at her last trip to Disney World in Florida. "Oh, if only they were real," she mumbled. "Then there would be someone to converse with..." Even though she knew it was impossible in reality, Caitlyn still had her creativity inside her mind. Her imagination started to soar as the blue crystal lights from Atlantis illuminated the TV screen.
Suddenly, there was a sudden flash of light from outside her window. Everything quickly went dark. "Stupid power failures..." Caitlyn sat up on her bed and started blankly into the darkness. Her eyelids were about to close when all of a sudden, a peculiar thing happened.
The television turned itself back on, illuminating the room in a blinding light. Shielding her eyes so that she could see better, the teen squinted to see that something was in the middle of the screen. It looked so enchanting that she couldn't help but to slowly step forward in admiration of its beauty. "I want to touch it," she softly blurted out, reaching her outstretched right hand to touch what she expected to be the glass of the screen.
Surprisingly, her hand went right through the supposed barrier and into the white light. The female's eyebrows went up in shock and confusion. With her left hand, she traced the edge of what seemed to be reality and surreality. Poking the upper half of her body into the light, Caitlyn quickly tilted out far enough to grasp the alluring object. "Got it," she finally announced to herself once the object was in her possession.
Without warning, a sudden bite from her cat (most likely she was nibbling on her owner's toes) made the girl stumble forward and made her fall head first into the never ceasing light. A scream wanted to escape from her throat, but at the speed at which she was travelling, no sound would come out. Hugging the unknown item close to her chest, the teen tried to turn herself midfall to a position that would most likely cushion the impact with the ground. ... that is, if there was a ground. Her eyes instinctively closed tightly, not wanting to see her own demise.
The only regret on her mind was that she had never lived life to its fullest when she had the chance. She wanted excitement and adventure, she wanted to be somebody. Now, with her impending doom drawing closer and closer, it seemed as all hope was lost. Taking one last breath inward, Caitlyn threw her head back, awaiting her fate.
