Character name: Melinoe
Test: Tell us everything you know about your character. Can you get in touch with the character you apply for? Why do you want to play this character?
Appearance- Melinoe's appearance, even by the standards of the gods, who are all very colorful and unique looking, is extremely odd. One half of her body, the right half, is black, like ebony or coal, and the other half of her body (the left half, obviously) is white, like snow, or ivory. Her eyes are bright blue, like her father; her hair comes down just past her shoulders and is (naturally) like her hair, only reversed. It's split in half along the same 'line' she is; the LEFT side is black, and the RIGHT side is white. Much like Macaria is eternally a teenager, and Persephone is trapped in her 20s, Melinoe will forever appear as an 8-year old.
Personality- Due to years of being neglected, yelled at, insulted, and just treated badly, Melinoe turned...well, bad. She's sweet and kind, occasionally lamenting about her abusive childhood to anyone who'll listen, but it's all just a ruse. The REAL Melinoe is cruel, twisted, and manipulative. She enjoys it when mortals (as well as others) become frightened, and delights in the pain and suffering of others. She's an attention-hog, and will do anything for people to focus on her; unfortunately, one of her powers involves capturing a person's attention, sending them into a trance and then murdering them, so...the attention's not just because she's vain. Melinoe's also extremely random and is known to walk about the Underworld (or Earth at midnight) reciting verses or random phrases that she made up off the top of her head. Often, these verses or phrases make NO sense.
History- (oy, vey, I'm writing a lot XD) Melinoe, goddess of ghosts, and techinally the second princess of the Underworld, is the daughter of Zeus and Persephone.
It wasn't a voluntary birth. Zeus disguised himself as Hades to get to Persephone a few years back, and (strangely enough) Persephone fell for it. He seduced her on the banks of the Styx, and by the time she had figured out that 'Hades' was Zeus, she was pregnant for the second time with Melinoe. It's the reason behind her skin--white for the light that is Zeus (PFFT, YEAH RIGHT), and black for the darkness that is Persephone; the unison of life and death showed in the child that appeared because of it.
When Melinoe was born, Zeus refused to take any part in raising the child, leaving Persephone with a baby she didn't want, along with a husband and another (wanted) daughter who felt the same. Melinoe loved the Underworld, but hated her uncle and her half-sister with a passion, due to the fact that they hated her as well and treated her horribly. Persephone felt equally about Melinoe, and, although she wasn't nearly as cruel as Hades and Macaria were, she was still cruel to Melinoe. Still, her instincts as a mother were hard to ignore and she gave the little goddess the 'care' she needed. But never more.
Gods and goddesses grow the way mortals do, but, at a certain point, they STOP growing and maturing, and stay in that form for the rest of their immortal lives. Macaria had 'stopped' when she was about 16 or 17, Persephone, in her early 20s, Hades, in his late-30s or mid-40s. Melinoe, she had 'stopped' fairly early; when she was 8, her growth stopped and she stayed in that form.
When she was, by matter of time only but not appearance, 10 or 11, Melinoe discovered a new power other than her power to raise the souls of the dead to her command (an ability that earned her the position of Goddess of Ghosts). If she managed to capture a mortals attention for a long enough time, she could 'feed' on that attention in order to put said mortal into a trance, where she'd have full-access to their body; it was then she would murder the poor hypnotized creature and bring his or her soul into her personal realm of ghosts, spirits, and shades. This power was completely voluntary and controllable, but some (Macaria, for instance) only further looked down on her because of it.
Because she was not wanted in the Underworld, Hades, Macaria, or either of the imps would lock her in some closet somewhere to get her out of the way. Melinoe never minded; it was a place to think and scowl about her life in solitude--she had always preferred solitude.
I want to play her because...well, she's an interesting character, and I'm not just saying that because she's my creation (never mind Greek Mythology). Melinoe is a complex goddess who's been abused her whole life, knows she's been abused her whole life, doesn't care, is disgustingly evil and murderous, but also sweet and adorable. She's able to make people feel bad for her and then, a second later, she kills them for her own personal gain.
DOESN'T THAT SOUND LIKE A FUN CHARACTER TO PLAY?! Besides, she fits in with my legion of Hercules characters.
Roleplay
Give us a sample on how you're going to play your character. Use your imagination
"He thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts," sing-songed Melinoe in her naturally high-pitched voice, as she wandered through the halls of the Underworld. Ghosts that passed her bowed or nodded their heads in respect; Hades ruled them, but so did she--she could control them as well as he could.
"He thrusts his fists against the posts," said Melinoe again, rounding a corner, "and still insists he sees the ghosts."
Melinoe stopped and vanished suddenly.
She appeared on Earth; it was nighttime, around 10 pm. There were a few scattered people on the streets, but not too much. The little goddess tilted her head, her white and black hair swishing to one side as she observed them all.
There were plenty to join her in the Underworld as her shades, but...no. No, she didn't want to. Wasn't feeling like it. Some other time, maybe. Tommorow.
Melinoe cast one blue-eyed look at the streets, and disappeared into foggy mist, reappearing back in the Underworld.
She resumed wandering and sing-songing her favorite verse.

Who else do you already play? Hades, Persephone, Macaria, Cerberus, Demeter, and Hecate. But Macaria doesn't count, because she's the child of two characters on here....come to think of it, Melinoe doesn't count either, for the same reason. XD

Questions, comments, suggestions? I know most goddesses/gods get chucked in the Guardians category, but Melinoe is NOT a Guardian...um...either Sidekicks or Villains. You guys can decide...
OH, and the 'he thrusts his fists....' thing, I didn't come up with that; all credit goes to Stephen King. ^^
