~~~Who I am Inside~~~
What is your character's history? Are they a hero, or a villain, a sidekick or guardian? What has happened to them in their lives to make them the way they are today?
Claude Benedictus Frollo was the eldest out of he and his brother Jehan. Jehan was a louse (The only word I could find for lazy bum) while Claude proved to be a very intelligent person and went on to study law, theology, science, medicine, and even learned several languages; thus he became a scholar and this paved the way for him to become a Judge. During his studies, however, he learned about gypsies and believed they were immoral with their practices, thus convincing him that he must stop the 'heathens' and rid the world of their evil. Once he appointed Judge, Frollo decided to do just that: rid the world of gypsies by first starting with Paris.
(This part follows the events of the movie, aided by my memory and Wikipedia.)
One night, a group of Gypsies were on their way to escape but were stopped by Frollo and his men. All were arrested except for One woman. She tried to run away and Frollo chased her on horseback. She was killed and the package she was carrying was seized by Frollo. It was a baby, a deformed One. A monster, as described by Frollo. The Judge was about to kill it when he was stopped by the Archdeacon. He blamed him for the death of the gypsy woman whom Frollo chased. The Judge justified himself by stating that he merely pursued and had done nothing wrong. A brief moment of guilt and desire for redemption, though, forced him to adopt the child. The child was taken in but hidden in the bell tower and given the name Quasimodo, meaning 'deformed'. He forbode the boy to go out of the cathedral, warning him of all the dangers of Paris.
One day, while Quasimodo was reciting his alphabet, he accidentally said 'festival', which Frollo correctly assumed to mean the Fool Of Festivals which the hunchback wished to attend. He then explained again that the public wouldn't understand Quasimodo and that he adopted the hunchback after his mother abandoned him. (Yeah right.) Of course, Quasimodo had to then promise him he wouldn't go to the festival. After this, Frollo met up with Captain Phoebus whom he had called back to Paris from the war. He explained to him that the reason he was called back was to help get rid of the gypsies. The Judge also confided to Phoebus his suspicions of a gypsy safe haven underneath the city. He then took Phoebus with him to the festival, unaware that Quasimodo ran away and was going to be there as well. When he did find out, he was infuriated but refused to intervene on behalf of his 'son' and allowed the gypsy Esmeralda to save him instead. Frollo was quickly attracted to the gypsy because of her beauty and her defiance towards supreme authority.
Later, after he had dealt with Quasimodo and after Esmeralda had taken refuge in Notre Dame, Frollo went in a guilt trip, believing his attraction to Esmeralda is a major sin and begging forgiveness. Upon finding out Esmeralda had escaped, Frollo then set out on a search throughout the whole city looking for her. He tried to kill a family who allegedly helped gypsies but was stopped by Phoebus. The outraged Judge gave orders Phoebus' death. (I believe this is the part where Phoebus is shot with arrows or am I wrong? Just curious.)
Frollo then convincingly deceived Quasimodo by saying the gypsies' safe haven has been located will be attacked. The Judge then infiltrated the Court Of Miracles with his army, leading up to the arrest of the gypsies and Esmeralda's execution. This and the following events are where it's evident that Frollo is a major villian. Quasimodo was Esmeralda's rescuer though and a revolt against the army insued, during which Frollo goes into the cathedral. Of course. the Archdeacon tried to intervene once more but Frollo flat out rebuked him and set out to kill the hunchback. It turned out to be the perfect moment since Esmeralda was still passed out and Quasimodo was beside himself. Frollo pretended to be compassionate but his 'son' saw the reflection of his knife and realized Frollo had been trying to kill him all along. This is when Esmeralda awoke and fled with Quasimodo out onto the balcony. The Judge had now become more malicious than ever and chased the couple. He knocked Quasimodo off the balcony but fell off himself and the only stopping him from falling was the hunchback's grip. Taking advantage of this moment, Frollo let go of Quasimodo and climbed onto a gargoyle in order to kill Esmeralda while she was vulnerable. However, Frollo just happened to be standing on the gargoyle right when he raised his sword to kill the gypsy and the statue fell off, bringing the Judge with it. Or so everyone thought. Frollo didn't know what happened but he never landed on the flaming ground. He had survived somehow and found himself to be inside his chambers when he came to. But while he survived, so did his vendetta. And it is worse than ever. (With your permission, I intend Jafar to be Frollo's savior, unless anyone else offers.)
Describe your character's personality. What are their strengths and weaknesses, what are their passions? What qualities do they have that are good or bad?
Frollo is a man who lives in lies and pretends to be merely interested in justice but the reality is quite different. He is so self-righteous that he has convinced himself that he is doing God's well and that everyone against him must be stopped. Of all the types of people he hates the most, gypsies are pretty much topping the list. They are believed to be outside of order and are consequently treated like dirt. Needless to say, Frollo is not a nice man. He is a sexist, yet lovesick at times and was somewhat attracted to Esmeralda when they first met as a result of both that and his intrigue at the gypsy woman. He is also rather controlling but quite clever and flexible. When he was dangling to his death, he managed to grasp a handle that was lining the sides of the cathedral and climb onto a gargoyle and get himself onto the surface where he attempted to kill Esmeralda who was holding onto Quasimodo.
~~~That's How You Know~~~
Give us a small sample of how you will play your character. Please don't copy a scene from their movie, and give us at least three paragraphs.
In a lonely room of the Cathedral Notre Dame, a fire was roaring in the fireplace and a man was slowly kneeling over in the shadows. Actually, Judge Claude Frollo was no ordinary man: he had the power to take a man's life without blinking or experiencing any sense of guilt. There'd been days in which he'd mercilessly allowed men and woman to fall to their deaths. And for what? His own hatred for Gypsy blood. But despite all the bloodshed that had been spilled during Frollo's time at Notre Dame, he really had done nothing wrong. After all, they were just criminals, filth of the earth, and surely no One would miss them. Not a very high price for justice. And it did get done.
But tonight was different. Tonight, Judge Claude Frollo, the man who had persecuted so many and slept on while lives were being taken, was kneeling over in prayer. No, he said silently. Don't treat me like this Maria. I am merely doing God's work. This is all for you. I have done nothing wrong. Tears started to stream from his cheek, My campaign doesn't mean to hurt you, the gypsies are like a disease and diseases must be cured. I have followed in your ways all my life. Please don't treat me like this!
Suddenly, the door opened and Frollo turned around. A soldier was standing there, waiting to be acknowledged. "What is it?" Frollo demanded. The soldier replied nervously. "Sir, the Gypsy, he's been found dead." Frollo stared, that man was a heretic, a thief, not to mention the fact that he was alive. But it was all over now. "Very well then." The Judge replied. He waved a hand as to dismiss the soldier. But he just stood there. "But sir, he killed himself..and..." "AND?" Frollo stared at the soldier, what was wrong with a gypsy's death? One less Gypsy on the streets meant One step closer to the total extermination. And that was when Paris would finally be safe again. "What's the matter with that?" Frollo continued. "He's dead and that's all that matters. Now go!" The soldier hesitated then started to leave. The Judge had already turned around and started thinking to himself again. He was interupted for nothing and he had forgotten what he was thinking about. Well, no One else had better disturb him again, unless they had something important to say. The Judge went into thought again.

Why this character? What draws you to them, what makes you want to play them? Do you have anything in common with them?
Frollo is such an interesting person for One to play. He can be ferociously evil but still is One that garners sympathy from the audience at times. I've actually wanted to play him before but haven't had the chance to. Actually, he reminds me of several people from Opera. The Grand Inquisitor from Don Carlos for instance: An extremely old man who justifies every single One of his decisions and whoever's not with him is against him. Basically, Frollo is a very complex character who seldom regrets his actions and attempts to do wrong but is extremely religious so I guess that's what draws me to him. I also am curious as to how I'll do with my interpretation.
